Planning and research helped Joann D’Addio turn her retirement dream into reality
Do you dream of enjoying your retirement years on an island, but think it is an economically unfeasible dream? Think again, according to former CPS special education teacher, counselor, and CTPF member, Joann D’Addio. When she imagined her retirement, she envisioned a welcoming tropical atmosphere with modern amenities and opportunities to be active. She found all that and more when she retired in 2017 to the Big Island of Hawaii. Aloha, retirement!
Joann states that her island dream was possible because she did careful research ahead of her retirement date, followed a plan, and got help with retirement planning from a professional financial planner. Following a carefully crafted 5-year plan, she was able to escape the hustle and bustle of life in Chicago. She now watches amazing sunsets from her lanai, eats bananas right off the tree, and welcomes friends and relatives to her new hometown.
The Big Island offered her a “slice of paradise.” The largest and most volcanically active of all the Hawaiian Islands, Hawaii boasts surprising climate (ecological?) diversity, possessing 8 out of the world’s 13 climate zones. The Island also hosts many accessible activities, and Joann takes advantage of all the Island has to offer. She can be found walking, doing water aerobics, zip lining, and volunteering. She tries to do a new activity each month, taking advantage of both sides of the island and the diverse climate. She makes time to “be useful.” She says, “As teachers, we have spent our entire careers devoting ourselves to others. It is important to keep giving back.”
